What is the EASI?
The Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration®️ (EASI) is a low cost, internationally developed tool designed to assess key sensory integration functions that supported learning, behaviour, and participation in everyday life.
It provides assessment of sensory integration and processing differences, including strengths and challenges impacting participation in everyday life:
- sensory perception
- sensory responsiveness
- postural, ocular, and bilateral integration
- praxis (motor planning)
What set the EASI apart was its commitment to minimising the influence of culture, language, and prior experience. This makes it an inclusive and equitable assessment tool for global use.
Why did this matter?
A valid and reliable assessment tool like the EASI is essential for occupational therapists and other professionals working with children and young people. The EASI identifies sensory integration differences that impact development and function. Importantly, the EASI was designed to remain freely accessible at local costs where possible, ensuring affordability and global reach.
Recruitment and study status
Recruitment for the UK and Ireland cohort closed, and the study was completed. We recruited children aged 3 to 12 to contribute to the international normative data collection. By participating, families helped build a robust, inclusive, and representative dataset. This generosity of time from therapists and parents will support future, long-term goals of developing the EASI for use across the lifespan in a low-cost and accessible format.
