#OccupationalTherapyWeek2024

Following World Occupational Therapy Day celebrated on the 27th of October, this week is our national awareness week about Occupational Therapy. So, today is the beginning of Occupational Therapy Week 2024.

This year’s campaign title is “The power of occupational therapy—transforming health and social care.”

It is dedicated to creating awareness of the role of occupational therapists in health and social care and their importance in improving people’s lives.

This is an important week for OT’s.

Occupational therapy is a broad profession in which we can work in several fields and with many people with diverse conditions and life stages. So, we usually decide to specialise in a concrete area of practice, doing a Master’s, PhD, or innumerable training courses.

However, it is important to always remember that, above all, we are occupational therapists, regardless of our specialisation.

For example, doing Ayres’ Sensory Integration specialisation does not turn an OT into a Sensory Integration Practitioner or therapist, or ASI Practitioner…

This means that being an OT is already really valuable, although, of course, it is essential to keep trying to become a better professional by learning new techniques, tools, and approaches that the scientific evidence brings us. So we can improve our clinical practice and support clients in the best way.

Coming back to this year’s campaign focus… Occupational therapy’s role in Health and Social care is crucial for making a complete impact on people’s lives. Health and social care teams should always include an OT as a key piece.

The Royal College of Occupational Therapists recognised the outstanding work of our very own Kathryn Smith, a founding Director of Ayres Sensory Integration Wise (ASI Wise) has contributed to our profession. Every year, the Royal College of Occupational Therapy (RCOT) celebrates excellence in Occupational Therapy. These awards recognise a member’s significant achievements and contributions to the profession. We look forward to hearing more from the RCOT Awards Ceremony later this year and sharing this celebration with the ASI Wise Community. Once again, congratulations, Kath.
