Sleep is not a luxury. It’s a necessity for development, regulation, healing, and learning. But for many children with neurodisabilities, sleep is anything but simple. New research published in the Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disabilities (2025) offers robust evidence that sensory-adapted sleep environments, like Cubby Beds, can help transform families’ nighttime experiences.
Let’s unpack this study and see how it beautifully connects to the principles of Ayres Sensory Integration®.
What Are Cubby Beds?
Cubby Beds are enclosed sleep systems designed for children with complex needs. They offer:
- Soft, padded walls
- Gentle, dimmable lighting
- White noise and quiet operation
- Secure zippered doors
- 24/7 monitoring features for safety

These features work together to create a calming sensory environment, not unlike a sensory retreat. They reduce the risk of injury, support regulation, and promote a predictable space where the nervous system can settle.
What Did the Study Find?

Researchers surveyed 225 caregivers of children with neurodisabilities (mostly autistic children, many also with intellectual disabilities or epilepsy). Caregivers reported significant improvements after introducing a Cubby Bed:
- Sleep duration increased from 4–6 to 8–10 hours per night
- Night-time awakenings dropped from 5–6 to just 1–2 times
- Significant reduction in minor injuries and elopement (escape to avoid) incidents
- Overall increase in feelings of safety and security at night
While the study didn’t directly measure caregiver well-being, many parents shared that improved sleep helped them feel more rested and less anxious and better support their child during the day.
How Does This Link to Sensory Integration?
Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) helps us understand how the brain processes and responds to sensory input. The environment can support or disrupt self-regulation for children with sensory integration and sensory processing differences, especially in touch, sound, or movement.
This study demonstrates that when we get the sensory environment “just right,”:
- Children feel safer and calmer
- Sleep becomes easier to access and maintain
- Behavioural safety improves (e.g., fewer self-injuries or night-time wandering)
- Families benefit from fewer crises and reduced stress
This is a real-world example of how co-regulating environments, designed with sensory needs in mind, promote occupational performance—in this case, the occupation of sleep!

Why This Matters
At ASI Wise & The Sensory Project, we often discuss participation through the senses. This research shows the power of embedding sensory understanding into everyday routines. It’s not about fancy equipment, it’s about creating attuned environments that meet a person’s sensory needs so they can thrive.
We see this in classrooms with sensory ladders, in clinics using weighted play, and now, in bedrooms, where the proper sensory support can make the difference between rest and restlessness.
Final Thoughts
This study reminds us that good sleep isn’t just about bedtime routines but safety, comfort, and the right sensory conditions. As we continue championing sensory integration approaches beyond childhood, into real-world spaces and systems, studies like this help us push for inclusive, evidence-informed design in homes, schools, and healthcare.
Let’s keep dreaming big, because every child deserves a good night’s sleep.
