Another week of summer holidays… and this week is focused on the auditory sensory system.
Located in the inner ear, it supports communication by helping us to communicate our needs, but also allowing us to socialise with other people and know how to function as part of society,… and it has a protective function, as it gives us critical information about what is happening around us. It anticipates something before it happens, as we often hear something before seeing it. It alerts us to danger before it happens, so we can start getting ready and doing the right thing to keep ourselves safe.
Playing games that support the auditory system can be a great idea during these holidays. Here are some ideas! Some of them can be great for auditory seeking kids, and others can be good for supporting kids with regulation.
What are you listening?

The idea is to play with kids to listen to different environmental sounds, and think together about where they come from. The idea is to listen carefully, discriminate sounds, and identify them. It is a nice time to sit or lie down on the ground and have a relaxing awareness auditory game!
Instrument creation:

To create musical instruments with anything you have at home, for later doing a home concert!
An easy an fun istrument to be built can be a rainstick 🌧️🎶, but imagination is welome. You can use boxes, cans, wooden stiks, elastics, bottles,… You can also use paints to decorate your homemade instruments. It can be a very complete activity involving other senses too.
Ball drumming:

Our start activity!
Apart from supporting our auditory processing as it is played with music and “instruments”, it also supports bilateral integration, sequencing, and social participation, involving other senses as vestibular or poprioception.
You can use therapy balls and pool noodles, but you can also create your own instruments or use any other utensil you have at home.
