A guide for parents, teachers and anyone supporting children, young people and adults in everyday life
The words sensory integration, sensory processing and sensory modulation are often used together. Sometimes they are used as if they mean exactly the same thing. They are closely connected, but they are not identical.
Understanding the difference can help parents, teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, carers and support staff feel more confident when thinking about sensory needs. It can also help us move away from labels and towards curiosity, compassion and practical support.
At The Sensory Project, we are interested in sensory understanding because it helps us support participation. That means helping people take part in the everyday activities, relationships and routines that matter to them, in ways that feel safe, meaningful and manageable.
This article accompanies our downloadable handouts, which explain the differences visually and simply. They are designed to support conversations at home, in schools, in therapy, in care settings and across everyday services.
Why do these terms matter?
When a child covers their ears in assembly, refuses certain clothing, crashes into furniture, struggles to sit still, avoids messy play, chews constantly, becomes distressed in busy places or seems exhausted after school, adults may ask: “Is this sensory?”
The answer might be yes, but we then need to ask a better question: “What part of sensory experience are we noticing?”
Are they finding it difficult to register sensory information?
Are they noticing too much at once?
Are they struggling to adjust the level of response?
Are they finding it hard to make sense of the information?
Are the environment, activity or expectations creating unnecessary barriers?
This is where the differences between sensory processing, sensory modulation and sensory integration become helpful.
Sensory processing: taking in and making sense of information
Sensory processing in one sensory system
Sensory processing can occur within a single sensory system, or sensory channel, before the brain integrates information across the whole body.
For example, within the auditory system, the brain may need to detect a sound, determine how loud or important it is, and make sense of where it is coming from. Within the tactile system, the brain may need to detect touch, decide whether it feels safe or uncomfortable, and determine whether it is light, firm, sharp, warm, or cold.
So sensory processing can include:
Registration: noticing the sensory information
Reactivity: adjusting the strength of the response
Discrimination: making sense of what the information means
This term refers to this happening within one sensory channel, such as sound, touch, movement, smell or body signals.

Sensory modulation: adjusting the level and intensity of response
Sensory modulation is part of sensory processing. It is about how the nervous system adjusts the level and intensity of response to sensory information.
A simple way to describe modulation is to think about a volume control.
Sometimes the nervous system turns the response up. Sounds may feel too loud. Lights may feel too bright. Touch may feel uncomfortable. Movement may feel scary. A busy classroom, playground, supermarket or dining hall may feel overwhelming.
Sometimes the nervous system dials down the response. A person may need more movement, pressure, taste, sound or activity to feel alert, connected or organised. They may seek climbing, jumping, chewing, fidgeting, spinning, deep-pressure input, rough-and-tumble play, or constant movement.
Sometimes the nervous system moves between the two. A child may be overwhelmed by noise but seek movement. They may avoid light touch but love firm pressure. They may cope in the morning but find everything harder by the afternoon. They may manage well at school and then fall apart at home because they have been working so hard all day.
Sensory modulation helps us stay in a “just right” range for the task, the place and the moment. This does not mean being calm all the time. A child may need to be lively for play, alert for learning, quieter for listening, active for sport and settled for sleep.
Modulation is about flexible regulation. It helps us shift our state so that we can take part.
When modulation is difficult, children may appear over-alert, under-alert, anxious, restless, shut down, irritable, impulsive, avoidant or emotionally overwhelmed. These responses are not deliberate misbehaviour. There may be signs that the nervous system is struggling to adjust to the demands of the situation.
For parents and teachers, this is an important shift. Instead of asking, “How do I stop this?” we can ask, “What is the child’s nervous system trying to manage?”

Sensory integration and processing
Sensory integration and processing is the way the brain and body take in sensory information from the world around us and from inside our own body, and how these link together.
Sensory integration is the bigger picture.
It is the way all the sensory systems work together with the brain, body, emotions, movement, activity, environment and relationships to support everyday participation.
This includes the familiar senses: seeing, hearing, smell, taste and touch. It also includes the body senses that are often less talked about, but deeply important.
These include:
- the vestibular sense, which helps us understand movement, balance and where our head is in space
- the proprioceptive sense, which helps us understand body position, muscle stretch and how much force to use
- interoception network (from a brain function place not quite the same as the core senses), this is rather a network which helps us notice internal body signals such as hunger, thirst, pain, temperature, breathing, tiredness, nausea and the need to use the toilet
Sensory integration and processing are happening all the time. A child sitting in a classroom is not only listening to the teacher. They may also be processing the scrape of chairs, the brightness of the lights, the smell of lunch, the feel of their socks, the movement of other children, the effort of sitting upright, and the internal feeling of being tired, hungry or anxious.
For many children, the nervous system manages this information well enough that they can focus on learning. For others, the information may feel too much, too little, unclear, unpredictable or difficult to ignore.
It can be helpful to think of sensory integration and processing in three linked parts.
Registration is noticing the information. Some children notice sensory information very quickly. Others may need stronger, repeated or more intense input before they register what is happening.
Reactivity or Modulation (older term) is how strongly the nervous system responds. Some children have very strong responses to certain sounds, textures, smells, lights or movement. Others may have a quieter response and may seek more movement, pressure, sound or activity to feel alert and organised.
Sensory Perception or Sensory Discrimination (older term) is the process of making sense of information. This helps us know where our body is, how much force to use, where a sound is coming from, whether something is light or firm, and how to plan our movements.
When we understand sensory processing, we can begin to see that a child is not simply being “fussy”, “clumsy”, “difficult” or “attention seeking”. Their brain and body may be working very hard to notice, organise and make sense of information.
Sensory integration: bringing the pieces together for everyday life
Sensory integration is not only about taking in information. It is about using that information to act, move, learn, communicate, play, self-care, connect and adapt.
For example, when a child climbs onto playground equipment, they are using vision, balance, body position, touch, movement, planning, timing, confidence, emotional safety and social awareness. When a child writes in a classroom, they use posture, hand strength, visual attention, touch, body awareness, movement control, planning, and focus. When a child joins a group game, they are using sensory processing, emotional regulation, motor planning, timing, communication and relationships.
That is sensory integration in action.
When sensory integration is working well enough for the person and the situation, the child may feel safe, alert, and organised enough to take part. They may not find everything easy, but they have enough body and brain organisation to engage.
When sensory integration is difficult, daily life can feel confusing, effortful, overwhelming or exhausting. Children may struggle with movement, attention, play, handwriting, dressing, eating, sleep, transitions, emotional regulation, social participation or confidence.
This is why sensory integration is not just about sensory preferences. It is about how sensory information supports everyday function and participation.
A child may love movement but still struggle with balance and coordination. Another child may avoid messy textures but also find handwriting difficult because touch and body awareness are not giving clear information. Another may seem confident and chatty but become overwhelmed when the environment becomes noisy, crowded or unpredictable.
The sensory systems do not work separately in real life. They work together.
How this helps parents
For parents, understanding these differences can reduce blame and increase confidence.
Many families tell us that sensory understanding helps them make sense of everyday situations that previously felt confusing. Dressing, mealtimes, school mornings, bedtime, hair washing, shopping, parties, transitions and homework can all be affected by sensory experience.
- A child who refuses socks may be experiencing touch as uncomfortable or distracting.
- A child who crashes into the sofa after school may be seeking proprioceptive input to feel more organised.
- A child who becomes distressed in a supermarket may be overwhelmed by lights, sounds, smells, movement and unpredictability.
- A child who does not notice they are hungry, thirsty, or need to use the toilet may be having difficulty registering or interpreting interoceptive signals.
- A child who struggles with handwriting may need support with posture, body awareness, touch, vision, movement control and motor planning, not simply more practice.
This does not mean every challenge is sensory. Children are whole people. Health, pain, sleep, anxiety, communication, development, trauma, relationships, learning needs and life events all matter too.
But a sensory lens can help parents ask more compassionate and practical questions.
- What is my child noticing?
- What might they not be noticing?
- What feels too much?
- What feels not enough?
- What helps them feel safer, more alert, calmer or more organised?
- What makes participation harder?
What can we change around the child, rather than asking the child to cope alone?
This is not about letting children avoid everything that is difficult. It is about understanding what is happening so that support can be kinder, more effective and better matched to the child.
How this helps teachers
Teachers and school staff often support many children with different needs at the same time. A sensory-informed approach can help make classrooms more inclusive, not only for children with identified needs, but for everyone.
A sensory lens helps staff notice how the classroom environment, daily routine, teaching task and social demands affect participation.
For example, a child may find carpet time difficult because sitting still on the floor requires postural control, body awareness, listening, visual attention and inhibition of movement. Another child may struggle during transitions because the noise, movement, uncertainty and change in expectation are too much. Another may appear distracted because they are monitoring every sound in the room. Another may seem lethargic because they need more movement or body input to become alert enough to learn.
Small changes can make a meaningful difference.
These might include:
- clearer routines and visual information
- movement opportunities built into the day
- quiet spaces for recovery
- reduced visual clutter where possible
- thoughtful seating
- predictable transitions
- access to appropriate sensory tools
- choice where possible
- adult curiosity before correction
- time to process instructions
- supportive relationships and co-regulation
The aim is not to create a perfectly silent, still or sensory controlled classroom. Real life is sensory. The aim is to notice barriers and create better conditions for learning, belonging and participation.
Sensory support is not about normalising children
This point matters.
Sensory support should not be about making a child look more typical, still, compliant or convenient. It should not be about removing differences or forcing children to mask their discomfort.
A neuroaffirming sensory approach asks what the child needs in order to participate as themselves.
For one child, participation may mean wearing ear defenders in assembly. For another, it may mean moving while listening. For another, it may mean using a quiet space before returning to class. For another, it may mean adapting the task, reducing sensory load or offering a different way to join in.
We do not need to make every child participate in exactly the same way for their participation to be meaningful.
This is especially important when supporting autistic children, ADHD children, dyspraxic children and others with sensory differences. The goal is not to reduce visible difference for adult comfort. The goal is to support comfort, confidence, autonomy, regulation and participation.
What about sensory strategies?
Sensory strategies can be helpful, but they work best when they are carefully matched to the person and the situation.
A sensory strategy might include movement, deep pressure, quiet time, chewing, fidgeting, heavy work, a change in lighting, a quieter space, music, routine, visuals, a sensory break or an environmental adaptation.
However, no strategy works for everyone.
A weighted blanket may help one person and feel uncomfortable to another. Ear defenders may support one child in assembly but make another child feel isolated or more aware of internal sounds. Movement may organise one child and over-alert another. A fidget may support listening for one pupil and distract another.
This is why observation and reflection matter.
Before choosing a strategy, it helps to ask:
- What is the goal?
- Is the person trying to feel calmer, more alert, more organised, safer or more connected?
- What sensory system might be involved?
- What has helped before?
- What does the person choose naturally?
- What does the person say or show us?
- Does the strategy improve participation?
- Does it respect the person’s dignity and autonomy?
A good sensory strategy is not just something that looks sensory. It is something that helps the person take part in everyday life.
When might specialist occupational therapy, physiotherapy, or speech and language therapy be helpful?
Some children and adults benefit from general sensory awareness support at home, in school or in the workplace. Others may need a more detailed assessment from an occupational therapist with specialist training in sensory integration.
Referral may be helpful when sensory differences are significantly affecting everyday life, such as dressing, eating, sleeping, toileting, play, learning, movement, self-care, emotional regulation, independence or participation.
A specialist assessment can help explore how sensory processing, sensory modulation, sensory discrimination, posture, praxis, coordination, attention, environment, and activity demands interact.
Ayres Sensory Integration therapy is a specialist occupational therapy approach. It involves assessment led, play based, activity based intervention that supports sensory processing, motor planning, adaptive responses and participation. It is not the same as simply offering sensory toys or a sensory diet.
Not everyone needs this level of intervention, but for some children and adults, it can be an important part of support.
The bigger message
Sensory processing, sensory modulation and sensory integration are connected, but each gives us a slightly different way to understand what may be happening.
Sensory processing helps us understand how the brain and body take in and make sense of sensory information.
Sensory modulation helps us think about how strongly the nervous system responds, and how it adjusts to stay alert, calm or organised enough for the moment.
Sensory integration helps us think about how all the sensory systems work together with movement, emotion, relationships, activity and environment to support everyday participation.
When we understand these differences, we can become more thoughtful in the way we support children and adults. We can reduce unnecessary stress. We can adapt environments. We can choose strategies with care. We can listen more closely to what people are communicating through their words, actions, energy, movement, stillness or distress.
Most importantly, we can move away from asking people to fit into environments that do not work for them, and move towards creating the right conditions for participation, wellbeing and belonging.
