Sensory Ladders®️ and Ayres Sensory Integration ASI Wise Policy Statement

At ASI Wise, Sensory Ladders® are rooted in the values and principles established by Dr A. Jean Ayres. They are designed to extend Ayres Sensory Integration into everyday life in a way that is respectful, user led, and firmly grounded in participation.

Sensory Ladders® are always co produced with the person, and where appropriate their family and supporters. They are not imposed. Each Sensory Ladder® is built from the person’s own words, images, and lived experience of their sensory states. This reflects Ayres’ belief that people are active participants in their own change and that meaningful progress happens when we work with, not on, the person.

Sensory Ladders® support the development of adaptive responses. By making sensory states visible and understandable, a Sensory Ladder® helps people notice where they are, identify where they need to be for a particular activity, and choose sensory strategies that support that shift. This aligns with Ayres’ focus on the just right challenge and on sensory integration as a foundation for purposeful, goal directed action.

Safety, trust, and emotional regulation sit at the heart of this approach. A Sensory Ladder® provides a shared language that reduces shame and blame and recognises behaviours as linked to sensory experience. This supports therapeutic alliance, co regulation, and compassionate care across home, school, clinic, and community settings.

A Sensory Ladder® provides a shared language that reduces shame and blame and recognises behaviours as linked to sensory experience.

Every Sensory Ladder® is different. This honours Ayres’ emphasis on individual sensory patterns and the need to tailor support to each person’s strengths, preferences, and needs. Sensory Ladders® connect directly to real occupations and daily routines, reflecting the core principle that sensory integration is always in the service of participation in everyday life.

As an organisation we are committed to the following principles in our use and teaching of Sensory Ladders®:

  • Sensory Ladders® are used to support adaptive response, regulation, and participation, never as a tool for control or coercion.
  • Sensory Ladders® respect and celebrate individual differences and cultural context.
  • Sensory Ladders® are grounded in the theory and fidelity of Ayres Sensory Integration while remaining flexible and responsive to real world settings.
  • Sensory Ladders® foreground lived experience as a valid and essential source of evidence alongside research and clinical reasoning.

Through Sensory Ladders®, ASI Wise & Sensory Project seek to honour Dr Ayres’ legacy while extending her principles across the lifespan, supporting children, young people, and adults to understand their own sensory stories and to participate more fully in everyday life.
