Today, 1st of March, is dedicated to Self-Injury Awareness Day.
This can be a difficult topic to talk about, but it is happening, and as therapists, we can see it in many clinical settings.
Individuals experiencing certain mental health conditions may engage in self-harm as a way of managing overwhelming emotions or coping with significant emotional distress.
As occupational therapists or other health professionals, we can offer practical tools and supportive strategies to help individuals manage and work through these difficult experiences.

Sensory Ladders® is a tool that can help individuals experiencing this identify and understand their self-states.
They offer a simple, visual way to understand these sensory patterns and respond with care. They support regulation and praxis, the ability to plan, organise, and carry out everyday activities. This makes them useful not only for feeling calmer, but for doing, participating, and engaging with the world.
Together with other clinical tools such as Sensory Spiders™ and Sensory Grids™, Sensory Ladders® can become a key element in the emotional, mental, and physical health and well-being of individuals experiencing self-injury.
