ADHD, the Senses, and the future role of Occupational Therapy in the MDT.

For those of us working with people with ADHD — and those of us living it — a brand new meta-analysis (April 2025) in JAACAP confirms what many have long known:

Sensory integration and processing differences are a significant and common part of the ADHD profile.

This major review found that people with ADHD are much more likely to experience differences in how they process sound, touch, movement, and visual input. These aren’t just side-effects of attention difficulties — they’re integral to the ADHD experience.

So what now?

This growing evidence base strengthens the case for sensory-informed support — including occupational therapy — across the lifespan.

And we already have practical guidance: The UK Adult ADHD Network’s consensus statement, led by Adamou et al. (2021), outlines occupation-focused OT interventions that address sensory regulation, stress management, time use, and social participation.
