This week, from the 12th to the 18th of May, is Sun Awareness Week.
Sun Awareness Week usually happens in May, as the days are growing longer, and we can begin to sense the arrival of warmer weather—increasing the amount of time outdoors along with increased sun exposure.
The campaign goal is to raise awareness about the risks of too much sun exposure. These risks are related to skin cancer, which is increasingly common nowadays, and it is a global concern.
This initiative is organised by dermatology and cancer prevention organisations, and it aims to address the global rise in skin cancer.
It is necessary to shift people’s attitudes towards the idea of getting tan without restraint and highlight the importance of sun protection every day of the year. People need to incorporate simple protective actions to daily life, like wearing sun-safe clothing like hats or long sleeves, sunglasses, staying out of the sun during peak hours, and applying sunscreen regularly.

Sun exposure, when done deliberately, can be very beneficial and is a source of health, both for our Mental and Physical health. Spending time outdoors and receiving sunlight (during certain times of the day, using adequate protection, and in moderation) helps us regulate our nervous system, giving us a state of calm and well-being.
It is common for people to dislike suncream on their skin, presenting sensory aversions to this tactile sensory input. But it is essential to go beyond this and use sunscreen for proper skin protection.
Melanoma fund has a space on their website with free resources for parents, teachers and children regarding the essential use of sunscreen.
“The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code is a free educational resource for all those who work outdoors with primary-aged children. By becoming Sun Protection Accredited you’ll find out why sun protection is vital, and how best to implement this into your outdoor sessions.”
