Join us for an interactive workshop about this innovative model, created by Occupational Therapists in South Africa. The Wall Model (Adapted Version) and the Checklist of Occupational Performance Components in Children (COPCC), authored by the presenters; Annamarie Van Jaarsveld and Elize Janse van Rensburg can help guide clinical reasoning in the assessment and treatment of children in occupational therapy. Although the theory is grounded in the theory of Ayres’ Sensory Integration developed by Jean Ayres, the application is relevant beyond Sensory Integration, as sensory functioning is critical to early development for all.
WHAT IS THE COPCC?
The Checklist of Occupational Performance Components in Children (COPCC) is non-standardised assessment tool that can be used by Occupational Therapists with children aged 3 to 6 years. It is based on the Wall Model Adapted Version and allows for informal assessment of all of the components contained in the model, including sensory, motor, cognitive-perceptual, affective and motivation components.

What is the Wall Model©Adapted Version?
The Wall Model © Adapted Version is an integrated model presenting developmental components dependent on the sensory systems, typically addressed by the occupational therapist in her assessment and treatment of children.
The Wall Model Adapted Version acknowledges and supports work done by Dr A Jean Ayres. It reinforces the importance of our sensory systems and the processing of sensory information, essential to development and learning, providing a foundation for individuals to engage in meaningful and health-promoting activities/occupations.
The Checklist of Occupational Performance Components in Children (COPCC) is a cost-effective, non-standardized assessment tool that can be used with children aged 3 to 6 years. The COPCC allow for primary screening of sensory, motor, cognitive-perceptual, affective and motivation components. It is based on developmental milestones, and the checklist is organised according to abilities, enabling quick screening of a child’s developmental age across developmental ages. Assessment is done using familiar play materials and includes kinesthetic, 3D and 2D perceptual activities.
It is child and therapist friendly, with no recurring costs such as the need to purchase test booklets as is the case with most standardised assessments. The COPCC contains observational test items that need profession-specific knowledge and skills and can thus not be performed by any profession other than occupational therapists.
In combination, the Wall Model Adapted Version and the COPCC allows for assessment, clinical reasoning, intervention planning and progress monitoring.
Although a complete COPCC kit is available, a Telehealth version has been developed and allows for assessment via an electronic platform which is ideal during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Annamarie van Jaarsveld (M.OT; PhD)
Annamarie van Jaarsveld’s career as an occupational therapist started in 1979. She started working within the field of mental health with a special interest in child psychiatry. In 1984 she moved to private practice.
In 1994 she was appointed as a junior lecturer at the Department of Occupational Therapy, University of the Free State (UFS) were she is currently still employed. Her main fields of interest are paediatrics, sensory integration, and mental health. Apart from being an academic, she remained involved in practice and currently acts as a consultant and mentor at the training private practice of the Occupational Therapy Department (UFS). She also remains involved in related professional bodies and has served on the board of the South African Institute for Sensory Integration (SAISI) for the past 34 years and has served the institute in various capacities. Her current portfolio is International Liaison.
She was and is involved in various research studies and publications (nationally and internationally), with her field of speciality been Ayres Sensory Integration. She obtained her PhD in 2018 with a study titled Educational Design Research: Designing a professional Master’s curriculum for sensory integration training within the South African Context. She has lectured extensively on a national level and has also delivered various congress papers nationally and internationally. She has, on three occasions, been an invited speaker at international sensory integration congresses both in the USA and Europe. In 2011 she received the Sonia Martins Lopez International Award, in Los Angeles, recognising an outstanding individual from outside the United States, promoting sensory integration research and practice. In 2017 she received the Discovery Clinical Excellence Award 2017 at the IMFAR SAACAPAP, Congress with which
SAISI recognised her contribution to research within the field of sensory integration. In 2019 she received a rating as an established researcher from the National Research Foundation of South Africa.
Mrs Elize Janse van Rensburg (M.OT)
Elize is an occupational therapist and manages a paediatric private practice in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She is also a part-time lecturer in occupational therapy at the University of the Free State, currently serving as the vice-chairperson of the South African Institute for Sensory Integration (SAISI).
She obtained her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy in 2015. Elize is one of the co-founders of “Built to Bloom”, that offers training and products related to early childhood development, occupational therapy and sensory integration. She is also a wife and a mother to two beautiful children – a six-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.
