Workshop | The Power of Touch in Mental Health Services: Exploring it’s role in Recovery and Wellbeing

This workshop explores the crucial role of the tactile sensory system in mental health practice. Grounded in contemporary neuroscience and trauma-informed care, it will guide participants in deepening their understanding of how tactile processing shapes occupational participation, emotional well-being, and recovery.

Together, we will examine the neurobiology of the tactile system and its interaction with emotional regulation, attachment, and body-based responses to trauma. The session will place particular emphasis on clinical application, supporting practitioners to use tactile input thoughtfully and safely in mental health settings.

Drawing on current research and evidence-based practice, participants will gain practical strategies for recognising, adapting, and applying tactile-based interventions that respond to diverse individual needs. The workshop will also highlight how clinicians can advocate for the inclusion of tactile approaches within therapeutic frameworks, reinforcing their value in fostering safety, connection, and meaningful engagement.

Whether you are new to sensory integration or keen to refine your practice, this session offers practical tools, clinical insights, and a deeper appreciation of how the tactile system supports participation and well-being across the lifespan.

By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the neuroscience of the tactile system and its links to occupational participation.
  • Highlight the importance of considering the tactile system when using a trauma-informed approach.
  • Recognise the clinical implications of using tactile input in mental health practice.
  • Apply an evidence-based approach, drawing on the latest research around tactile input.
  • Select appropriate sensory strategies to support intervention.
  • Advocate for the role of therapeutic touch in mental health services.
