ASI2 includes hands-on sensory integration education about assessment, including registration, perception (sensory discrimination), praxis patterns, and sensory reactivity (sensory modulation). You will learn a range of assessments, including administration, scoring, and data interpretation via supplied interpretation tools, to inform clinical reasoning across the lifespan.

This module price includes exclusive access to EASI:

  • EASI Manual - supplied as a PDF
  • Paper-printable testing materials and EAST Test Sheets - supplied as PDF printables
  • About the EASI Handouts for Families and for Reports
  • FLIQ (Family Life Questionnaire) - supplied as a PDF
  • One-year free EASI Scoring Platform (ESP) subscription (Value approximately £47).

Description

RATIONALE

This module introduces the learner to information on direct and indirect assessments, including the Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration (EASI), the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT), the Sensory Processing Measure 2 (SPM-2,) Ayres’ Clin OB’s (ACO), Adult Adolescent Sensory History (AASH), Sensory Integration Inventory (SII) and more.

AIMS

The module provides hands-on practice, application and review of all aspects of sensory integration, including perception, reactivity, postural, ocular and bilateral control and praxis, with various assessments and practice of assessment administration and scoring with peers. Advanced clinical reasoning is developed while interpreting assessment data systematically, via interpretation tools, to ensure intervention is data-driven, planned, implemented, focused, appropriate, and effective.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Successful students will be able to:

  1. Determine an assessment plan for a client, including the evaluations appropriate to assess ASI constructs in all areas, considering and analysing the psychometric strength of the evaluations.
  2. Reliably administer relevant assessments, including Ayres’ Clin Obs, EASI, SIPT, AASH and SPM-2, and understand the constructs tested by sensory-related measures.
  3. Designing clinical observations of sensory integration constructs when standardised measures are impossible, demonstrating competence in applying clinical observations based on ASI.
  4. Describe the patterns of sensory integration function and dysfunction, analysing and interpreting assessment results according to these, relating the data obtained through the application of the instruments with the individual’s occupational performance difficulties.
  5. Create the intervention plan based on the evaluation, identifying client-centred goals and objectives from presenting concerns linked to the interpretation.
  6. Determine how the intervention will be conducted, including in various contexts, ensuring the evaluation report meets the standard for structural elements on ASI Intervention Fidelity Measure.
CONTENT
  1. Introducing and orienting to the scope of the comprehensive assessment in ASI.
  2. Specific methods for assessing core sensory integrative functions. Students are introduced to information on direct and indirect assessments, including the Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration (EASI) (Mailloux, Parham & Smith Roley, 2016) and with some learning about its precursor, the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT)through www.wpspublish.com.
  3. Planning intervention when applying the ASI framework.
  4. Hands-on practice, application and review of the constructs of sensory integration and praxis, considering a range of assessments and selecting the appropriate evaluations for different clinical presentations and practice areas.
  5. Discussion and reflection will enable participants to clarify, adapt and adjust test administration as part of practice assessment administration and scoring.
LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS
  1. Theoretical material is introduced through lectures, developed, and reinforced through directed reading and workshops.
  2. Lectures will provide an overview of the main topic areas, develop the student’s understanding of the key issues, and guide them through the necessary reading to learn more about the subject.
  3. Online video-material-initiated workshops and tutorials will involve students in online group discussions.
  4. Where required, tutorials will also involve one-to-one online tutoring between tutors and students.
  5. Practical exercises will allow students to work to consolidate the knowledge learnt from the lectures.
  6. Students will be directed to read critical texts, integrated into the core content of the lectures, and as the module progresses, to source independently, reading as relevant to their area of specialism and clinical interest.
  7. Students will be expected to undertake self-study. This will be, in part, preparation for the assignment.
  8. Students must also identify and follow up on their learning needs.
  9. Students will be encouraged to participate actively in the module using online communication tools like discussion forums.
  10. Tutors will actively support students in discussing and learning about ASI assessment in online tutor groups and forums. Students will be expected to join the community of practice, benefit from mutual support, and seek advice from their peers.
  11. The module is delivered as blended learning.
    1. Online lectures
    2. Setting up an EASI Kit with online support via tutor groups and online forums,
    3. Face-to-face in-classroom practical learning of EASI and other assessment methods includes VPr:C Challenge Dash,
    4. Between live teaching day and practical homework, e.g. VPr: Designs,
    5. Live practice with family, children without sensory differences (min 2), and a client representative of the therapist’s client group.
    6. Development of Client Case Study Presentation including EASI and Scoring,
    7. Case Study Review,
    8. Presentation of Case Study at Tutor Group, marked by Education team, Instructing and Instructor,

Compulsory Tutor Group attendance x 6 sessions (2 case studies/ 2 hr session).
