About this Community
Working in private practice offers autonomy, flexibility, and creativity, but it can also lead to professional isolation, complex decision-making, and the need to juggle multiple roles at once.
This Community of Practice is a dedicated space for therapists who are delivering sensory integration and sensory-informed approaches within independent, non-statutory, or commissioned services.
Rooted in Ayres Sensory Integration® and participation-focused practice, this community supports clinicians to deepen their understanding of:
- Sensory processing and integration across the lifespan in diverse, real-world contexts
- The intersection of neurodivergence, mental health, trauma, and environment
- Delivering individualised, occupation-focused intervention outside traditional systems
- Navigating the clinical, ethical, and relational demands of independent practice
This is not about replicating statutory models; it is about developing responsive, flexible, and context-driven practice that meets people where they are.
As with all Communities of Practice, the focus is on shared learning, reflection, and application, supporting therapists in thinking critically and evolving their practice in meaningful ways.
Who this is for
This Community of Practice is for:
- Occupational Therapists and other clinicians working in private, independent, or non-NHS practice
- Practitioners delivering Ayres Sensory Integration® or sensory-informed interventions
- Therapists working across paediatric, adult, or lifespan services
- Clinicians navigating self-employment, commissioned work, or multidisciplinary private settings
You may be:
- Running your own practice
- Working as part of an independent service
- Balancing private work alongside statutory roles
Whether you are newly transitioning into private practice or have years of experience, this space is designed to support clinical depth, confidence, and connection.
Join the conversation
Private practice can sometimes feel like you are working in parallel rather than together.
This Community of Practice offers a space to connect with others who understand the realities of independent working, where you can bring:
- Clinical questions and complex cases
- Reflections on practice and decision-making
- Challenges around boundaries, ethics, and service delivery
- Ideas, innovations, and emerging approaches
Through shared discussion, reflection, and collaboration, we build a community that strengthens both individual practice and the wider profession.
You are invited to step into a space where your thinking is supported, your questions are welcomed, and your practice can continue to grow alongside others doing the same work.
