Inside the manual
An invitation to explore, at your own pace
This 2026 edition brings together colouring designs, quotations selected by The Sensory Project team, and practical guidance for exploring colour, materials, paper and the experience of making.
Use a whole page, choose a small section or simply begin with a colour that feels right today. A finished picture is only one possible outcome. The conversation, the shared activity and the person’s experience matter too.
Your purchase includes
The licensed 44 page Colouring Through the Senses™ manual as a printable PDF, together with the associated webinar, Mindful Art and Colouring Through the Senses: Adapting Creative Practice Across the Lifespan.
The manual and webinar are accessed through your learning space. This is a digital resource for printing, rather than a posted printed book.
The experience of creating
Notice more than the colour on the page
Colouring brings together visual attention, touch and the feedback that comes from purposeful hand use. The feel of the paper, the resistance of a pencil, the pressure of a stroke, posture, pace and the surrounding environment can all change the experience.
The manual offers suggestions for materials, printing, finding a rhythm and using the activity alongside a personal Sensory Ladder®. Begin with curiosity about what the person notices and values. Colouring may feel settling, engaging, tiring or unhelpful at different times, so adapt together.
Colour and visual choice
Explore the amount of detail, contrast, lighting and colour that feels comfortable and interesting to the person.
Touch and hand use
Consider paper texture, the tool’s grip and resistance, and tactile and proprioceptive feedback during the activity.
Pace and comfort
Make room for pauses, changes of position and noticing comfort or fatigue, whenever the person finds this useful.

Mindful Art and Colouring Through the Senses
Adapting Creative Practice Across the Lifespan
Explore creative practice through a sensory and participation focused lens. Consider how the activity, materials, environment and relational support can be shaped around the person’s interests, preferences and ways of communicating.
Mindful art offers an invitation to pay attention to the experience of creating, with room for choice and different responses. There is no requirement to sit still, work in silence, focus on breathing or complete a picture.
Use the webinar for your own learning. As the licensed therapist, you may also play and discuss it with the clients you directly support, individually or in groups you personally facilitate.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the connections between mindful art, sensory integration and processing, and meaningful participation.
- Identify the sensory qualities and practical demands of pencils, paint, felt-tips, oil pastels, crayons and chalks.
- Distinguish mindful art from other sensory-based approaches and describe its purpose and limitations.
- Plan creative activities that respect each person’s choices, sensory preferences, communication, comfort and pace.
- Adapt materials, positioning, environments and support across the lifespan and for different abilities and clinical needs.
- Agree meaningful goals with participants, select appropriate outcomes, and review relevant evidence alongside their experiences.
Adapt around the person
Creative participation across the lifespan
For therapists using creative activity within health, education, social care and community practice, the manual offers a flexible starting point. The person’s own interests, identity, communication and priorities guide how it is used.
Children and young people
Offer choices about colours, materials, how much of a design to use and whether to create alongside someone. Make space for movement, play and different ways of communicating.
Adults
Connect the activity with the person’s interests, routines and reasons for taking part. Respect their preferred style, pace and wish to talk, create quietly or try something else.
Older adults
Consider familiar materials, meaningful themes, lighting, comfortable positioning and ease of handling. Preserve choice, dignity and adult identity throughout.
Co-production means deciding together what to try, what support is welcome and what to change. Taking part may involve choosing a colour, making marks, talking about a quotation, observing or sharing the activity in another way.

Clear permissions for everyday practice
Using your licensed manual and webinar
The booklet
The manual is licensed to the named therapist for use within their own professional practice. You may download, retain and print your reference copy, and use the permitted person-facing colouring and reflection pages with people you directly support.
People you support may keep their own completed pages. Please retain the title, authorship, copyright notices and licence identification on permitted copies.
The webinar, including client groups
Only the licensed therapist may play or present the webinar to clients, including in group sessions they personally facilitate. Clients attending those sessions do not need a therapist licence.
The licence does not permit an unlicensed colleague or other staff member to run a session using your video access. Each therapist using the video independently requires their own licence.
Sharing and wider use
Do not share account details, circulate the full manual or blank resource files to colleagues, or copy, distribute or upload the webinar to another learning platform. Public screenings, wider training use, republication, translated editions or rebranded resources require separate written permission from The Sensory Project.
Copyright and other intellectual property rights remain with their respective owners. Nothing in these terms limits uses permitted by applicable law. For organisational permissions or another proposed use, contact our team.
Choice and professional judgement throughout
Use the resources within your competence and with the accompanying guidance. This is a creative and reflective resource, rather than a diagnostic test, standardised assessment or prescribed programme. Respect each person’s communication, consent and right to skip, pause, change activity or stop.
