The Sensory Project · parent education and support
A welcoming, parent-focused way to explore how sensory experience, body state, relationships, activities and environments may shape everyday family life.
Curiosity instead of judgement. Connection before correction. Participation rather than performance.
A shared language for family life
Parenting Through the Senses helps parents and carers make sense of individual sensory patterns without reducing a child to a label or a list of behaviours. Learning is connected to the person, the activity, the environment and what matters in everyday life.
Pause and become curious about body signals, sensory experiences, relationships and context.
Explore patterns without assuming that every response has one cause or one sensory explanation.
Listen to the child, consider what already helps and co-produce ideas that feel safe and realistic.
Adjust the fit between person, activity, environment and support so everyday doing is more reachable.
More than information
The programme grew from parent education groups in Cornwall. Its strength came from bringing clear sensory ideas together with family knowledge, practical reflection and the experience of learning alongside other parents and carers.
Clear explanations of the senses, body state, regulation and participation, with space for questions.
Parents and carers bring essential knowledge of the person, family routines, priorities and culture.
Ideas are explored thoughtfully and proportionately, then reviewed through their effect on participation.

Open the media and evidence →Parenting Through the Senses is education and support. It does not diagnose sensory differences or replace an individual occupational therapy assessment when this is needed. Families are supported to notice, reflect and make proportionate changes while seeking additional professional help where appropriate.
