Kath and the team at ASI Wise have been working alongside Hunrosa to develop and deliver an online interactive education programme for parents and professionals about sleep. This programme complements face to face consultation and training delivered in the South West and further afield about sleep and self-regulation.

More about Hunrosa

Screen Shot 2019-06-03 at 20.49.57.pngHunrosa is part of the British Sleep Society and is a member of the British Paediatric Sleep Association. The service receives regular oversight from a professional body. Direction and advice is from a sleep consultant as well as a paediatrician and consultant OT who are both expert in sleep issues. Hunrosa sleep service runs to the highest possible standards and incorporates the latest research findings about sleep. We are trained in the use of CBT-I which is an extremely effective therapy for insomnia, an approach which does not rely on medication to achieve results.

Sleep deprivation can cause significant difficulties in the lives of both adults and children with sensory integration and processing challenges.

Here are a few of our favourite resources for children, teens and adults to promote a good night’s sleep*. These resources have been gathered together by Kath Smith ASI Wise Director, Sensory Integration Practioner and Lecturer. Kath has many years of experience and clinical practice, supporting parents and families to be able to effectively plan and put in place strategies to address sleep and other difficulties.

Sensory Ladders and Self Soothe Strategies

Pokemon-Sensory-Ladder-copy.jpgBeing able to go to sleep is about more than just settling down at bedtime. Everything we have done in the day contributes to our levels of alertness and stress.

Sensory Ladders and related self soothe and self-regulation strategies are a way to help children and adults recognise their levels of alertness and to become self-aware.

It is only once we are more self-aware about of states of alertness that we can put in place strategies to do something different to change them.

Read more about Sensory Ladders here.

For those with trauma this can be especially important – read more about this here.

Aromadough

The Inventors of Gluten Free Playdough are Diane (Sidabras) Scott and Maryanne Gallagher who invented the product back in 1992. The two California moms developed Aroma Dough® for their own children who suffered from ADHD and life-threatening peanut allergies back in 1992. They initially started mixing up batches of it in their garages and selling them in tubs at craft shows. But when they did research on aromatherapy and the olfactory benefits for children both in their moods and in sensory and fine motor development and the dangers of a wheat based diet, they knew this product was a winner.

Mohdoh

The foundations of MohDoh were set some 30 years ago when the mother of its inventor, Simon Palfreyman, would add a lavender essence to his modelling clay to help calm him down.  Simon was an extremely hyperactive child and not much has changed as an adult!Screen Shot 2019-06-03 at 20.19.08

Now he is the father of two equally excitable boys who seem to have spent the best part of their early years with snotty noses, grazed knees and elbows, disturbed sleep patterns as well as numerous stops by the side of motorways whilst the contents of stomachs are revisited.

Simon wanted a way of helping his boys cope with these everyday ailments without submitting them to the chemicals, dyes and sugars as well as the numerous side effects that accompany conventional medication, so his thoughts returned to his modelling clay and he thought that his mum may have been on to something after all…….

The rest, as they say is history!

Just Right Touch and Temperature can help us sleep

Stopping bedding moving about and falling off, as well as providing deep pressure touch (and proprioception when a fidgety child pushes against the bedding), the Fidget Bum can be helpful to some wiggly children and teens. Some children and teens will use a vast collection of soft toys and children, teens and adults often even use the pet cat to the same effect.

Fidget Bum

While providing pressure and security it also prevents the covers form moving throughout the night, helping ensure your child gets a full nights sleep.

A perfect product to help a child and parent through the stages of bedtime, from settling the child and throughout the night.

The Fidgetbum wraps under the mattress and around your existing bedding. Fits a single bed.
